A unique, slower-growing hornbeam whose bright lime green foliage emerges in spring before gradually transitioning to a striking chartreuse yellow through summer and mellowing to golden green in autumn. Less vigorous than other hornbeams, this natural variety has denser branching and a tighter habit, holding its colour well without scorching from summer sun. As both a specimen and hedge, Carpinus 'Chartreuse' brings vibrant, lasting colour to landscapes while remaining easy to grow in a multitude of soils. Its graceful habit and acid-yellow leaves offer a brilliant alternative to standard green-leafed hornbeams.

  • Garden care:
Plant Carpinus trees between late autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil. Prepare a planting hole wide enough to accommodate the roots comfortably and enrich the backfill with well-rotted organic matter. Stake the tree firmly for support while it establishes.

After planting, maintain a clear, circular area around the base of the stem approximately 50cm (20in) in diameter, keeping it free of grass and weeds. Apply a layer of mulch over this area each spring, taking care to keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Water during dry spells for the first couple of years. Minimal pruning is needed, though light shaping can be done in winter if required.
