Adapting well to wet and boggy habitats, this deciduous aquatic perennial unveils strap-shaped leaves, a mesmerising fusion of mid-green and creamy-white stripes, resembling an iris. As midsummer appears, unassuming brown horn-like flowers emerge, subtly placed just below the tips of the leaf-like stems.

Beyond its ornamental charm, Acorus calamus 'Argenteostriatus' boasts long, narrow blade-like leaves attached to rosy coloured rhizomes, emitting a spicily scented aroma when crushed (in historical times, the roots and leaves were treasured for their medicinal and aromatic qualities, finding use in scented floors and a variety of products, including toothpaste and gin).

  • Garden care:
Acorus calamus is best suited to reliably wet or boggy soil, and can also be grown in shallow water up to around 22cm (9in) deep, making it ideal for pond margins. Plant directly, and anchor with a layer of grit or gravel.

It prefers full sun and needs soil that stays moist at all times. In late winter, wear gloves to comb through and remove any old or damaged foliage, and divide congested clumps in early spring every few years to maintain vigour.
