Thriving in its preference for wet feet, this deciduous aquatic perennial unveils strap-shaped, aromatic leaves in a vibrant shade of mid-green. Come midsummer, inconspicuous yet intriguing brown horn-like flowers emerge, reaching up to 7cm (3") just below the tips of the leaf-like flower stems.

Resembling an iris in its elegance, Acorus calamus adds a touch of sophistication to pond margins, whether nestled in the formal ambiance of an urban setting or gracing the wild fringes of a natural pond.

  • Garden care:
Acorus calamus is best suited to reliably wet or boggy soil, and can also be grown in shallow water up to around 22cm (9in) deep, making it ideal for pond margins. Plant directly, and anchor with a layer of grit or gravel.

It prefers full sun and needs soil that stays moist at all times. In late winter, wear gloves to comb through and remove any old or damaged foliage, and divide congested clumps in early spring every few years to maintain vigour.
