Adiantum aleuticum 'Imbricatum' is an elegant fern, useful for providing attractive ground cover in a partially shaded spot. Often infused with pink when they first emerge in spring, the light green fronds form in splaying fans, that are supported on ebony-black stems. Team it with hostas, hellebores and and other fern species for a naturalised, woodland effect.

  • Garden care:
Hardy Adiantum ferns prefer a cool, sheltered spot with dappled or full full shade and reliably moist, humus-rich soil. Before planting, improve the soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted compost or leaf mould.

Water well during dry spells, especially in the first growing season, and apply a generous mulch of organic matter in autumn to help retain moisture and improve soil structure.

In early spring, carefully remove any dead or damaged fronds right back to the base, being gentle around new growth as it starts to unfurl. Avoid planting in exposed or windy positions where the delicate fronds can scorch or tear.
