As it soon knits together to form an evergreen carpet, bugle makes an excellent groundcover and is particularly useful for planting at the front of a shady border.

This form has attractive, bronze-purple foliage, which is topped with small, densely packed upright spires of deep blue flowers in spring.

Ajuga reptans 'Atropurpurea' will tolerate sun or shade and even poor soils, provided there is adequate moisture.

  • Garden care:
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade where it will thrive, though it will also tolerate full shade. It's a spreading ground cover, so it space to form a mat, and avoid planting too close to other low-growing plants.

Keep watered in dry spells until established, then it’s generally low maintenance. Cut back any faded flower spikes and trim back runners if they spread too far.

To rejuvenate and minimise congestion, lift and divide clumps in late autumn or early spring every few years.
