An impressive sight in late spring and early summer, when the tall, upright stems emerge, each topped with a dense rounded cluster of small star-like flowers. It can be used to add height, colour and structure (without density) to mixed borders, and it also looks great when teamed with ornamental grasses in less structured settings. The flowers are a magnet for bees, and they're long-lasting when cut for the vase. Try to plant them amongst plants with low, leafy growth, as these will help mask their leaves, which die back before the flowerspike emerges.

  • Garden care: Plant the bulbs 15cm deep and 20cm apart to avoid the flowers being too crowded. Avoid excessive soil moisture and split and divide large clumps in autumn or spring.
  • Pets: TOXIC if eaten; Humans: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
