In summer, this ornamental onion produces giant flowerheads up to 30cm (12in) across, resembling a starburst or firework display with a mix of closely-clustered and long-stemmed, green-centred white flowers.

The unique spherical blooms of 'Arctic Snow' add dramatic flair to beds, borders, and containers, and are perfect for drying, where they can be sprayed with silver or gold for striking Christmas decorations.

Ensure adequate spacing when planting, as these bulbs are quite large and need room to display their full, eye-catching form.

Keep in mind that it is quite normal for the strap-shaped foliage to die back before the flowers start to emerge.

  • Garden care:
Allium bulbs are easy to grow in a sunny spot with freely drained soil, or a good quality potting compost. Ideally they should be planted in September or October, but could also be planted in early November in milder regions.

While keeping the size of the flowerhead in mind and avoiding overcrowding, dig holes roughly three times as deep as the diameter of the bulb and place them at the base, pointy side up before gently infilling and watering to settle them in.

In early spring, as growth begins, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser, and allow the plants to die back naturally and completely before tidying away.
