This captivating herbaceous perennial boasts an unusual and enchanting lavender-pink colouration that sets it apart in the garden. Astrantia major 'Florence' features deeply divided, palmate basal leaves that form an attractive clump, from which rise branched, erect, wiry stems. The stems are adorned with compact umbels of tiny flowers, each surrounded by a rosette of showy bracts in matching soft pink hues with subtle green tips. Blooming from early to late summer, this cottage garden favourite offers an extended period of interest in the garden. Its upright habit and long-lasting flowers make it an excellent choice for both fresh and dried floral arrangements. Even after the blooms fade, the dried flower heads retain their structure and turn a light brown, providing winter interest if left standing.
Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed. Astrantia thrive in consistently moist soils and perform best in cool, partially shaded summer conditions.
