Transform your garden with the Award-winning Wall Shrub Collection, a stunning trio of climbers that will thrive against any wall, fence, or arbour. With a mix of fragrant flowers and beautiful foliage, these plants provide year-round interest and elegance.

From the fragrant white blooms of the evergreen climbing Trachelospermum, to the lacy flowerheads and attractive bark of the deciduous hydrangea, and the sweet scent of summer jasmine, this collection has something for every season. Perfect for enhancing sheltered walls, or covering unsightly garden features, these versatile climbers are low-maintenance once established.

The collection contains one each of the plants listed below, each in a 9cm pot.

  • Trachelospermum jasminoides: An attractive woody, evergreen climber with rich, dark green leaves which turn bronze in winter. Clusters of highly fragrant, pure white flowers are produced from mid- to late summer. It is best grown against a warm, sunny wall in milder areas or in a greenhouse or conservatory in areas prone to severe frosts. Grows to 9m.

  • Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris: A tough and reliable climber, this self-clinging deciduous hydrangea is ideal for covering north-facing walls and fences where other plants find challenging. Its dark green, broadly oval leaves create a dense backdrop, turning golden yellow in autumn before falling to reveal attractive peeling bark. In late spring and early summer, large, lacy white flowerheads up to 20cm (8in) across appear, attracting pollinators. Grows to 15m.

  • Jasminum officinale: A popular, sweetly scented climber smothered in clusters of highly fragrant white flowers from June to August and pretty, fine foliage. This versatile, deciduous climber appreciates a sheltered, sunny, well-drained site, and can cope with dry conditions. Since it spreads quickly in all directions, it's ideal for covering a large south or west-facing wall or an unsightly garden building. Grows to 8m.

  • Garden care:
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

For the hydrangea, plant in moist, fertile soil and do not allow the soil to dry out while the plant is getting established. This species flowers on the previous season’s wood, so if you need to prune it back, do so in late autumn or early spring, but be warned that drastic pruning may restrict flowering the following year.

For the jasmines, plant in a warm, sunny and sheltered location, to help bring out the sweet fragrance of the flowers. If the soil is well-drained, they will cope with partial shade and cooler positions, though may suffer from frost damage in severe or prolonged frosts. When planting, add some soil conditioner (well-rotted compost) to the planting hole and some mycorrhizal fungi to aid root establishment.

Grow against appropriate support such as trellis or wires attached to walls and fences. Tie the shoots into their supports as they grow.
