A rare and delightful shrub, Calycanthus × raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' will often produce its lightly scented flowers from late spring to early autumn. The flowers themselves are a delight and form along the branches. They are a rich shade of burgundy red, with just a hint of cream towards their centre - very attractive against the backdrop of the lustrous green foliage, which usually turns buttery shades in autumn.

  • Garden care:
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sunny spot, ideally with some shelter from cold, drying winds. It thrives in soils with consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Mulch annually with well-rotted organic matter to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure.

Calycanthus is generally low maintenance but benefits from light pruning—remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth. Avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce flowering.
    • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
