  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil type: reliably moist or boggy
  • Rate of growth: slow
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

With its vigorous and grass-like demeanour, this hardy perennial commands attention as it forms substantial clumps boasting dark green, narrow, pleated leaves and tall stems that bear slender, drooping flower spikes. As a native plant, thriving in damp woods and shaded areas, Carex pendula is best suited for cool, damp soils and adaptable to both shady and sunny positions, providing year-round interest with dense clumps of evergreen leaves and offering vital winter shelter for insects. However, its propensity to self-seed readily demands careful management, especially in damp areas, to prevent invasive tendencies and ensure its graceful presence enhances rather than dominates the garden scene.

  • Garden care:
  • Plant out in reliably moist soil, or pot up into a pond basket and place at the margins of a pond in shallow water no deeper than 5cm (2in). A low maintenance plant, remove dead leaves and spent flowers as necessary. Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years.
