One of the most popular oxygenating plants, not not only looks attractive, but will help keep your pond free of algae. It has virtually no roots (if any), but its stems are covered in delicate-looking needle-like foliage, which absorbs carbon dioxide. They do die back in winter, but are fully hardy, so come back again each spring.

  • Garden care:
Ceratophyllum demersum (hornwort) is a free-floating, rootless oxygenating plant that’s easy to grow and ideal for ponds. Simply place bunches directly into the water, either loose or weighted with lead-free plant weights to keep them submerged. There's no need to plant in baskets or soil, as the plant absorbs nutrients directly from the water.

Position in full sun or partial shade and allow it to float freely or anchor in deeper water. It helps reduce algae by competing for nutrients and provides shelter for pond wildlife. Remove excess growth if it becomes invasive, especially in summer. In winter, it sinks to the bottom and regrows in spring.
