These eye-catching perennials have large, colourful foliage and showysummer flowers, which make them popular additions to large pots, borders and seasonal bedding schemes.

Canna may tolerate lowwinter temperatures in more sheltered positions, particularly if they areplanted deeply and protected with a deep autumn mulch. In cooler climates the rhizomes should be lifted after thefirst hard frost has blackened the foliage and stored in frost-free conditions.Voracious feeders, they should be kept well fed and watered while activelygrowing.

In each collection you will receive 1 rhizome each of the following:

  • Canna 'Phasion': Eachleaf is variously striped in green, purple, orange and pink, creatinga dazzling effect that is further enhanced when the orangeflowers appear. Spectacular in a hot-themed planting scheme,it also mixes well with plum and purple. Grows to 1.6m.

  • Canna 'Wyoming':Creating a dramatic statement towards the back of a mixed border, the largepurple-bronze leaves and very large ruffled apricot-orange flowers lend acolourful and exotic touch to planting schemes.Grows to 1.6m.

  • Canna indica 'Tropicana Black':Broad, near-black foliage, which is suffused with traces of plum and red,is topped with heads of dazzling scarlet flowers that fade to orangeas they age. A fine addition to summer bedding schemes, where it will create stature and drama. Grows to 1.5m.

  • Garden care:
Pot the rhizomes up into 20cm pots filled with agood quality compost. The rhizomes should be planted shallowly, just coveringthem with compost, but making sure that any new shoots are above soil level.

Water lightly and then grow them on at temperatures above 15°C, increasingthe water as they start to grow. Gradually harden off before planting out afterall risk of frost has passed.Water regularly during the growing season, applying aphosphorus-rich liquid fertiliser each month.

In frost-prone areas lift therhizomes in autumn and store in a frost-free environment in barely-moistcompost or leaf mould.

Cannas thrive in moist, well-drained soil, so regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Container-grown plants may need daily watering inhot weather to prevent drying out.

Once established, apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring, followed by ahigh-potassium liquid feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season toencourage strong growth and prolonged flowering.

A 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch layer of well-rotted compost will help to retainmoisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil quality. Deadhead spent flowers topromote continuous blooming and remove any damaged or yellowing leaves to keepplants looking their best.

In exposed areas, tall stems may require light staking to prevent breakage. Cutplants back to 10cm (4in) in late autumn, and lift rhizomes or move potsindoors before frost to ensure overwintering success.
