With its neat and compact nature, 'Guiding Promise' is a delightful choice for patio containers or meandering through mixed borders and small shrubs or roses, maintaining a perfect size without overpowering. Its deep mauve-purple blooms, delicately adorned with gently crimped edges, harmonise beautifully with showy white hydrangeas or pink roses. Named for, and celebrating the Girl Guides in the UK, this cultivar offers a second flush that extends the display right through to autumn. Ideal for novice gardeners, this clematis is hassle-free and easy to manage, making it a superb addition to any garden space.

Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these climbers in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
