Introduced in 2010, Ice Blue has lovely, big blue-tinted white blooms, perfect for that slightly shady spot in your garden. The flower colour is best retained over the lifetime of the bloom in partial shade. From the Prairie Series, this deciduous climber, has a flurry of flowers in early summer and then blooms intermittently later in the season.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to June and September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Clematis prefer a moist, well-drained, humus rich soil with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. Ice Blue is a group 2 clematis, prune in February and after the first flush of flowers in early summer. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
