With ethereal charm, Clematis integrifolia ‘Alba’ brightens the garden enchanting nodding white blossoms. These delicate flowers, occasionally tinged with a hint of blue at their base, gracefully encase creamy-white anthers within slightly twisted outer sepals. The allure continues with the emergence of feathery, silvery seedheads. Whether charmingly scrambling through roses and shrubs in a border or adorning obelisks in patio pots, this clematis exudes elegance and a delightful fragrance throughout its flowering season.
Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where that the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. Otherwise, use a clematis root protector, or top-dress the rootball (avoiding the immediate crown), with a generous layer of shingle or pebbles. This clematis is herbaceous and will die back during the spring - remove spent stems and foliage to the ground in February, and apply a thick layer of mulch to suppress weeds, feed the soil, and keep the root area moist and cool for the growing season ahead.
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
