Flowering from late spring to early summer and again in late summer to early autumn, 'Issey' has intensely coloured, bright red blooms with a yellow centre and flowers prolifically from old and new wood. The late summer and early autumn flowers are smaller in size but are produced very freely giving a mass of flowers. bred with a compact habit, this clematis is ideal for growing in a pot or container on the patio, or scrambling over a host plant in the border.

  • Garden care:
Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where that the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. Otherwise, use a clematis root protector, or top-dress the rootball (avoiding the immediate crown), with a generous layer of shingle or pebbles. In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant - again avoiding the immediate crown.
  • To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
