Emerging a deep blue/purple with a faint rose bar before fading to a lighter shade of blue, ‘Olympia’ is a colourful and compact option for smaller gardens with some shade. Rarely exceeding 1.5m in height, the single or semi-double petalled blooms overlap, each surrounding a boss of creamy-yellow anthers. This easy going Clematis produces flowering buds from leaf axils and the end of stems from late spring to early autumn.

Clematis prefer a moist, well-drained, humus rich soil with the roots of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
