Lily-of-the-valley are best loved for their highly fragrant flowers, which appear in late spring and early summer. Happiest in a partially shaded position with humus-rich, reliably moist soil, they are ideally suited to the woodland garden or naturalised planting scheme.

Tough perennials, they will steadily spread by underground rhizomes to form good-sized clumps, creating handsome, seasonal ground cover over time. If they get too big, Convallaria can be lifted and divided immediately after flowering, and small sections can be potted up and grown on before being brought indoors for a short period while they are in flower.

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties:

  • Convallaria majalis: Strongly scented, bell-shaped flowers with waxy textured petals are followed by bright red berries. These appear on slender, upright to gently arching stems, which arise from amongst the lush green foliage. Grows to 23cm.

  • Convallaria majalis 'Prolificans': Branching stems carry tight clusters of small, rounded blooms, which create a showy effect. The perfumed flowers last very well after being cut and make wonderful additions to either a hand-tied posy or a vase. Grows to 18cm.

  • Convallaria majalis 'Rosea': Pendent, pale pink flowers, with flaring, pointed tips, open from the base of the graceful racemes. Plant it in drifts under deciduous shrubs, or allow it to creep through the front of a shady border. Grows to 20cm.

  • Garden care:
Convallaria thrives in shady spots with well-drained, humus-rich soil. When planting bare root rhizomes, position them 5-8cm (2-3in) deep and space them 20cm (8in) apart to allow room for spreading.

Potted plants can be placed at 30cm (12in) apart and will increase to provide excellent ground cover. Water the rhizomes well after planting to help establish them.

To maintain healthy growth and prevent overcrowding, divide and replant clumps in September by carefully lifting the clumps and separating the rhizomes, ensuring each division has some roots attached.

Apply a generous mulch of composted leaf mould around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil as it decomposes.
    • Humans/Pets: TOXIC if eaten
