This distinctive annual produces softly cupped blooms with fused petals, creating a bowl-like shape around a bright yellow centre. Flowers open white and gradually develop a blush pink tint, often with subtle streaking, giving each one a unique appearance.

Blooms measure around 10-12 cm (4-5in) across and appear in abundance from midsummer until the first frost. The finely divided, feathery foliage forms a bushy backdrop, adding texture and lightness to the display.

Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Cupcakes Blush’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, flowering best when deadheaded regularly. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens, its long stems and unusual flower form make it a striking addition to floral arrangements. This cultivated variety is easy to grow from seed and attracts bees and butterflies throughout the season.

Garden care:
Pot on and grow on under glass until all risk of frost has passed and they can be planted outside in a well-prepared bed.

Pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushier growth, and feed at regular intervals throughout summer with a high-potash fertiliser. Taller plants may need supporting with brushwood stems in exposed positions.

  • Sowing instructions:
In early spring, sow seed shallowly in seed trays and keep under glass, transplanting them into individual pots when large enough to handle. Harden off before planting outside after the frosts.

Alternatively, sow in-situ in mid- to late spring in a well-prepared bed and thin the seedlings out as they grow to allow approximately 30cm between each.

  • Sow: March to May
