Carpet-forming evergreen with narrow rush-like leaves and minute brown flower clusters in summer
Garden care:
- Position: full sun
- Depth of water: 5-40cm (2-16")
- Rate of growth: fast
- Hardiness: fully hardy
This native, evergreen perennial thrives as both a bog garden marginal and shallow water beauty. It's very narrow, grass-like leaves, reaching up to 15cm (6”) when submerged, weave into a spreading carpet, adorned with tiny brown spikelets on unbranched stems come summer. Eleocharis acicularis unveils its fine, bright green appearance underwater, doubling as an oxygenator and acting as a haven for pond life such as newts and water snails.
Plant out in reliably moist or boggy soil, or pot up into a pond basket and place at the margins of a pond in shallow water no deeper than 40cm (16"). A low maintenance plant, comb through and remove dead leaves and spent flowers as necessary. Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years.
