This unusual, close relative of the strawberry produces small, juicy fruits with a sweet, tropical flavour reminiscent of pineapple. The berries ripen from green to creamy white with striking red seeds, creating a real talking and tasting point in the garden.

Flowers appear in May, followed by fruit in June when grown alongside a regular strawberry for pollination. Birds tend to leave the fruit untouched, mistaking them for unripe berries, so netting is rarely needed.

Pineberry ‘White Dream’ is a compact, easy-to-grow plant that performs well in pots, containers, or garden beds, offering a fun and flavourful twist on traditional strawberries.

  • Garden care:
Fragaria thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade. Plant these wild strawberries about 20-30cm (8-12in) apart in a sunny border or container, enriching the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure.

Water regularly during dry spells but avoid waterlogging their shallow roots. Mulch with straw or leaf mould to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Thin overcrowded clumps and divide them every few years to maintain vigour.

Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to boost growth and fruiting.
