A true herbaceous border favourite, geums also make a dazzling and unusual addition to cut flower arrangements too. Fully double, scarlet flowers, like miniature Tudor roses, rise above clumps of mounding green foliage on thin, wiry stems. Geum 'Blazing Sunset' is easy to grow and perfect for sunny or partially shaded borders. For best results, grow in a cooler part of the garden, in well-drained soil.

  • Garden care:
Plant Geum 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in a sunny to partially shaded position, improving the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter to ensure good drainage and moisture retention, especially if the soil is heavy or sandy.

Keep the plant well-watered, particularly during its first growing season and in dry periods, as Geum prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Deadheading spent blooms encourages continued flowering and prevents self-seeding.

Cut back untidy foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the the crown of the plant in spring.
