  • Geum 'Mrs J. Bradshaw' is a popular cultivated variety, with a long flowering season and semi-double, vivid scarlet flowers that appear from June to August among rosettes of puckered, scalloped fresh green leaves.

This easy-to-grow perennial looks best among other 'hot' coloured flowers towards the front of a sunny border.

  • Garden care:
Plant Geum 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in a sunny to partially shaded position, improving the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter to ensure good drainage and moisture retention, especially if the soil is heavy or sandy.

Keep the plant well-watered, particularly during its first growing season and in dry periods, as Geum prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Deadheading spent blooms encourages continued flowering and prevents self-seeding.

Cut back untidy foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the the crown of the plant in spring.
