A dense, upright evergreen shrub with lustrous, grey-green streaked, bright apple-green leaves, with irregular, creamy-white margins. This variegated form of New Zealand privet makes a marvellous semi-formal hedge or focal point for a sheltered, sunny, mixed or shrub border.

Perfect for warm coastal gardens, try pairing it with the darker-leaved Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom), for a wonderful light-reflecting display.

Griselinia is borderline hardy in the UK, tolerating mild coastal and southern regions where winters are less severe. In colder inland areas, it may suffer from frost damage, so planting in a sheltered spot or providing winter protection is recommended.

  • Garden care:
Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny position, sheltered from harsh winds. New Zealand privet tolerates salt spray, making it ideal for coastal gardens.

Water regularly during dry spells in the first year to help establish strong roots. In April or May, lightly trim any shoots that disrupt the plant’s symmetry, encouraging a dense, bushy shape. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted garden compost around the base after pruning to retain moisture and improve soil structure.

In colder regions, protect young plants from severe frost with horticultural fleece or mulch around the base. Once established, Griselinia is low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to maintain its form.
