A floating aquatic perennial with rounded leaves 3cm (1in) across, and white, tri-petalled blooms with a bright yellow basal blotch. Commonly called frogbit, this deciduous plant plays an important role in aquatic environments, providing shade and shelter for pond-dwellers whilst also preventing the formation of algae.
Plant by simply placing floating rosettes on the surface of still or slow-moving water in full sun to partial shade. The pond should be deep enough (at least 30-45cm or 1-1.5 ft) to prevent the bottom freezing in winter, as the buds sink to overwinter.
Keep plants tidy by removing older leaves and spent growth, and thin out excess plantlets that develop along runners in spring to prevent overcrowding and maintain good water circulation.
