The soft, silvery blue, star-shaped flowers are a gorgeous sight in early spring when they first appear amongst the open clumps of slender foliage. An RHS AGM recipient, Ipheion uniflorum 'Wisley Blue' is reliable and easy to grow in a sheltered spot, and the flowers have a light but sweet perfume. It's adaptable enough to be grown in small pots, or generous swathes throughout the garden, and it's a natural for gravel gardens or alpine beds.
A member of the onion family, it's leaves will emit a pungent smell if they are gently brushed or bruised.

Plant bulbs 10cm (4in) deep and 10cm (4in) apart from September to November. Provide a generous layer of protective mulch in autumn. In colder areas plant them into a pot so they can be over-wintered in an unheated greenhouse.
- Humans/Pets: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
