The combination of variegated foliage and rich purple flowers in summer, makes this a handsome addition to the edges of a pond. Plant this Japanese water iris straight into the ground and it will spread to form a generous swathe, or pot it up if you want a more compact clump.
The bold vertical leaves with creamy-white margins provide interest from spring to autumn, even when Iris ensata 'Variegata' is not in flower.

Plant Japanese water iris (Iris ensata) in moist, fertile soil at the edge of a pond or in a boggy area, with the rhizomes just at or slightly below the soil surface. Space plants about 45-60cm (18-24in) apart to allow room for growth, water well after planting, and keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and remove old foliage in late winter to encourage healthy new growth and abundant flowering.
