An elegant addition to pond or stream margins, this Iris is also suitable for smaller gardens where it can be used in watertight pots or barrels. The upright, strappy leaves of Iris ensata make a great contrast to a flat expanse of water, while the showy summer flowers add impact and colour.

  • Garden care:
Plant Japanese water iris (Iris ensata) in moist, fertile soil at the edge of a pond or in a boggy area, with the rhizomes just at or slightly below the soil surface. Space plants about 45-60cm (18-24in) apart to allow room for growth, water well after planting, and keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season.

Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and remove old foliage in late winter to encourage healthy new growth and abundant flowering.
