More compact than many of the other kalmias, this evergreen shrub can be grown in even the smallest gardens. Its glossy, rich green foliage will add year-round interest, but it's from late spring to midsummer that it really earns its keep - as that's when the plant is smothered in soft pink bloom. - Garden care: Remove the faded blooms regularly to prolong flowering. Requires minimal pruning - cut back specimens that have outgrown their allotted space gradually over two or three years in spring. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted leaf mould or composted pine needles around the base of the plant each spring.
