A leek with long, thick stems and delicious flavour, ‘Lyon’, introduced in the 1880s is a favourite on the show bench and in the kitchen. If showing, this variety will need an early start (January) otherwise, start sowing from March onwards, it’s very cold hardy and remains in good condition in the garden for months. - Growing instructions: Sow direct into shallow drills in a well-prepared seedbed in spring, and thin seedlings to 1cm apart. When seedlings are about pencil thickness, transplant to their final growing place, leaving 15cm between plants. For the longest white stems, dib a hole for each plant 15cm deep and drop the seedling in before filling the hole with water. Mulch plants with straw when the cold weather starts to prevent the soil freezing and you'll be able to get your leeks out of the ground right through winter.
- Sow: March to April
- Harvest: March to May
- Pets: TOXIC if eaten
