An elegant evergreen, with slender foliage that forms on gently splaying stems, Leucothoe keiskei Burning Love is great for adding year-round form and structure. It's at it's most colourful in spring when the new foliage emerges in a bright pink flush, and again in winter, when it turns a burnished red, and it looks wonderful when planted en-masse or when dotted through the front of a shady border.
Plant in moist, acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, ideally in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Avoid hot, dry, or exposed sites, as foliage can scorch or dry out. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the plant establishes, and mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark to help retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.
Minimal pruning is required. In late spring, remove any dead, damaged, or misplaced stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage healthy new growth. Lightly trim after flowering if needed to maintain shape. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring to promote strong growth and vibrant foliage colour.
