This perennial wonder unfolds in early spring, showcasing fragrant, pure white flowers reminiscent of arums. As the season progresses, broad veined and oval leaves, reaching a striking 90cm (3ft), unfurl with glossy green grandeur and offering a refreshing departure from the usual slender pond foliage. While slow to establish and grow, Lysichiton camtschatcensis can become invasive over time so requires environmental awareness if there are watercourses connected to the planting location.
Plant in permanently moist or boggy soil, ideally in a sheltered spot with partial shade. It grows best at the edge of ponds or streams where the roots can stay wet and seasonally submerged.
Keep the soil consistently damp, especially in dry weather, and mulch in autumn with compost or leaf mould to help retain moisture and protect the roots. Once established, it needs minimal care apart from removing old leaves after flowering to keep it tidy and healthy.
If planting directly in water, place it in a pond basket at a depth of 0-30cm (0-12in) below the water surface.
