The rounded (button-like) pinnae, which give this low-growing, evergreen fern its common name, form along the length of the splaying, pink-flushed stems, creating a lacey effect. Pellaea rotundifolia makes a handsome ground-cover in a partially shaded position, and it can also be used to add textural interest to pots or windowboxes.
Pellaea requires a moderately fertile, ericaceous, moist but well-drained soil. Plant in light shade (or in full sun with protection from hot midday sun). Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost into the planting hole.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. In frost-prone areas, protect the crown with a dry winter mulch. Cut back decayed fronds in winter to allow new growth to emerge, and ensure good airflow around the plant for healthy growth.
