A semi-evergreen, upright, bushy perennial with mid-green, small, oval, fragrant leaves with a striking two-tone, red and purple flower combination. The lower lip often softens to lighter pink as the flower develops resulting in a myriad of different wine and rose (rosé?) shades on the upright woody-stemmed sage at the same time. Wonderful for city and courtyard, cottage and Mediterranean styled gardens, or those plagued by deer. It needs some protection during the colder months, but its ability to regenerate from low down after a modest cold spell marks ‘Wine and Roses’ as a great long-term prospect.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Prune back around a third of the plant, making the cut just above a pair of leaves - this will maintain the structure and provide a sturdy base for new growth. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
