A vibrant perennial featuring striking dark red tubular flowers with sunny yellow interiors, arranged in arched sprays atop upright stems. Spigelia 'Little Redhead' forms a tidy clump of dark green, wedge-shaped leaves and thrives in rich, well-drained soil that remains consistently moist. This versatile plant flourishes in both full sun and partial shade, making it ideal for city courtyards, coastal gardens, and informal flower beds. Its long flowering period and resilient nature make it a standout choice for borders, and it can also be successfully grown in containers. For optimal winter protection, mulch deeply to protect roots from frost or relocate potted specimens to a sheltered spot.
Spigelia requires excellent drainage to thrive. Native to the eastern United States, it naturally grows on woodland edges and alongside streams, so mimic these conditions by ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. If your soil is heavy, consider using a raised bed or improving drainage around the root zone to prevent water from pooling. Feed fortnightly, with a balanced liquid fertiliser throughout the growing season to support its vibrant display, and provide winter protection by mulching or moving container-grown plants to a sheltered location to guard against prolonged or severe frosts.
