  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Soft spikes of woolly, purple flowers from June to September above rosettes of large, greyish white, felted leaves. This form of lamb's ears is primarily grown for its leaves, which are larger than other varieties. An excellent groundcover plant for sites in full sun, it's drought tolerant and provides a weed-suppressing carpet for much of the year.

  • Garden care: Ensure good drainage when planting as the plant can die back in heavy, poorly-drained soil. Give it space to spread out. Cut stems back to ground level in autumn and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Divide large clumps in early spring. Once established it’s reasonably drought tolerant, so will be happy in a dry, sunny site, or gravel garden.
