Pretty star-shaped pink flowers, each with a darker eye, appear in loose clusters on top of upright stems over a prolonged period from midsummer. Flourishing in a sunny, sheltered spot, it is ideal for planting in drifts through a gravel garden or freely draining border, and it also looks great when potted up for the patio. A member of the same family as the alliums, it has slender, strap-shaped foliage, which smells just like onions.

  • Garden care:
Plant society garlic in a sunny, warm spot at the pond edge where the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Keep the crown just above the surface of the water so only the lower roots benefit from the damp conditions.

Split and divide large clumps in spring to maintain vigour. In colder parts of the UK, grow it in pots or lift, so it can be overwintered in a sheltered, frost-free place, as prolonged cold can weaken the plant. Trim back tired foliage and remove old flower stems to keep it neat.
