Our bamboo control system is used to create beautiful areas of bamboo that add sound and movement to your garden. Installed in the soil, it keeps bamboo roots contained and stops the plant sprawling into unwanted areas.

Rhizomes are underground stems that run parallel to the surface and can travel a considerable distance from the original plant. The bamboo control system acts as a root barrier to prevent the rhizomes spreading. Instead they are directed to the surface and transformed into foliated growth producing a fuller, bushier plant.

Using this system a bamboo bush can be confined to a specific area and be as large or as small as you like.

How to install:

Dig a trench that defines the area you want your bamboo to fill, deep enough that the barrier membrane will stand 6-7cm proud of the soil's surface.

Place in your membrane at a slight slant, with the top edge angled away from the bamboo being planted. To do this in the corners, hold the membrane at the top, pull out the bottom and create a fold (you can use stakes to keep one section at a time in place).

When joining two ends of the membrane together, allow a minimum overlap of 0.5m. At overlaps seal both top and cut ends with gaffer tape to stop soil getting into the join.

After planting your bamboo make sure the membrane is bedded in well. Once a year in autumn, inspect and cut off any rhizomes that have escaped over the barrier.
