The dense, spreading branches of this attractive evergreen shrub are clothed in silvery-blue leaves and glossy black cones. Forming a low, splaying clump, Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' makes attractive ground cover at the front of the border or larger rockery. Tough and easy to grow, it will tolerate a wide range of conditions, including (once established) dry chalky or sandy soils.

  • Garden care:
Choose a site with well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic, and a sunny position to encourage vibrant growth and colour.

Avoid waterlogged areas, as junipers are drought-tolerant once established but dislike overly wet conditions. Mulch around the base of the plant in late winter with organic material like bark or wood chips, keeping the mulch clear of the crown to prevent rot.

Pruning is rarely needed, but you can remove any wayward or damaged shoots in autumn to maintain the plant’s natural symmetry. Ensure plenty of space for the plant to spread and develop its natural shape without overcrowding.
    • Humans: Harmful if eaten; skin allergen
