    • This hardy perennial stands out with its rich purple blooms that keep appearing from late spring into early autumn. The flowers have a velvety finish and sit in loose clusters above glossy, lobed green leaves that form a neat, spreading clump.

It copes well in sun or partial shade, making it a useful choice for borders, woodland edges, or lightly shaded spots where steady colour is needed. Geranium nodosum ‘Fielding’s Folly’ grows reliably in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and offers good drought tolerance once established, keeping its foliage fresh and tidy through the season.

    • Garden care:
Incorporate organic matter into the planting area and water regularly during first growing season so the roots establish well. Once settled, this geranium shows good drought tolerance and usually needs watering only in long dry spells. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in spring to help conserve moisture and keep weeds down.

Deadhead spent blooms to keep flowers coming, and trim lightly if the plant becomes straggly later in the season. Use only a modest amount of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring, as this species perform best without heavy feeding.

Cut back the plant to ground level in late autumn or early spring to tidy it and encourage fresh growth. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring to maintain vigour and shape.
