Spires of cerise flowers with white hoods are produced in late spring. 'Rachel de Thame' is a perennial lupin has a delicious peppery scent, and is perfect for the middle of the border. It looks particularly lovely with flame coloured plants, such as Iris 'Garnet Robe'. Remember to deadhead after flowering and protect against frost damage by covering the crown of the plant.

  • Garden care:
Plant lupins in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil, avoiding heavy clay. Water regularly while establishing, but once mature they become more tolerant to dry conditions.

Stake tall cultivated varieties with bamboo canes in spring before flowers appear, and remove faded blooms to encourage a second flush. Mulch lightly in winter to protect roots, and watch for slugs and snails on young growth.
    • Pets: TOXIC if eaten; Humans: Harmful if eaten
