We were delighted to be among the first to offer this for sale in the UK. It has the same glossy, holly-like, evergreen foliage that you would expect to see on a Mahonia, but this compact variety produces its flowers from the end of summer and all the way through autumn. These appear initially as elegant racemes smothered with bright orange-red buds, that open from the base of the spike to reveal cheerful yellow flowers. Once the flowers have faded, bluish-grey berries form, which contrast beautifully with the winter foliage.
Plant in a warm, sheltered spot in light shade or dappled sunlight, ideally protected from cold winds and frost. Grow in humus-rich, moist but well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Avoid waterlogged or very dry sites. When planting, dig in plenty of organic matter to enrich the soil and water regularly during the first year to help establish a deep root system.
Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or leaf mould around the base in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. After flowering, prune lightly to maintain shape, removing any damaged or leggy growth. In colder regions, protect young plants over winter with a mulch or fleece cover until well established.
