Leptospermum scoparium 'Red Damask' produces masses of double, dark red, saucer-shaped flowers borne on arching shoots from late spring to early summer and aromatic mid- to dark green leaves. This dense ornamental shrub is only half hardy but will happily grow against a warm, sheltered sunny wall in milder areas, or in a pot where it can be moved to a greenhouse or a protected area through the winter months away from frosts.

  • Garden care:
Plant in a warm, sunny, and sheltered position, ideally against a south- or west-facing wall for extra protection. Choose light, free-draining, slightly acidic soil and avoid heavy or waterlogged ground. Water regularly during dry periods while the plant establishes, but do not allow roots to sit in soggy soil.

After flowering, lightly trim or prune back shoots to maintain a neat, balanced shape and encourage bushy new growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood as it may not reshoot.

In colder regions or during severe frosts, protect the plant with a double layer of horticultural fleece and apply a thick mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base to insulate the roots. Feed sparingly in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering.
