This new form is noted for its profusion of flower spikes, which top the bushy, semi-evergreen mound of grey-green palmate foliage from early to midsummer. A delightful mound-forming flowering shrub, Lupinus arboreus 'Lavender Spires' flourishes in sunny spots with well-drained soils, so will make a stylish addition to coastal and gravel gardens as well as cottage style planting schemes, or those with a more unstructured feel.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally sandy or gritty, and avoid heavy, wet ground. Water regularly until established, then only in prolonged dry spells as it dislikes excess moisture. Apply a light mulch of gravel to help keep the crown dry.
Deadhead spent flowers to extend blooming and trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape, but avoid cutting into older woody stems. This plant needs little or no feeding, as too much fertiliser encourages soft growth.
