Named in honour of the Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, this exciting shrub has a very distinctive foliage colour. As they emerge in spring, the leaves are a rich salmon-orange, so these create quite a beautiful early show before they mature to green.
In early summer, clusters of creamy flowers are held at the end of the branches and these are followed by burgundy fruit capsules. Very decorative, Physocarpus Amber Jubilee makes an excellent addition to the mixed border.
Plant ninebark in well-drained soil and a sunny or lightly shaded spot, keeping it well watered while it settles in. Once it’s established, remove up to a quarter of the oldest stems at ground level after flowering to keep the shape fresh and encourage new growth.
Finish by spreading a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted compost around the base to boost soil health and help lock in moisture.
