    • An incredibly adaptable and undemanding plant, which makes excellent groundcover for borders and slopes.

Geranium nodosum is also one of the best geraniums for dry shade, so is ideal for underplanting established trees and shrubs. The flowers are slightly variable in colour, being a mixture of purple and pink, and they often appear over several months from early summer.

    • Garden care:
Incorporate organic matter into the planting area and water regularly during first growing season so the roots establish well. Once settled, this geranium shows good drought tolerance and usually needs watering only in long dry spells. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in spring to help conserve moisture and keep weeds down.

Deadhead spent blooms to keep flowers coming, and trim lightly if the plant becomes straggly later in the season. Use only a modest amount of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring, as this species perform best without heavy feeding.

Cut back the plant to ground level in late autumn or early spring to tidy it and encourage fresh growth. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring to maintain vigour and shape.
