The tightly rolled, blue-grey leaves of blue oat grass form a neat mound, crowned with upright golden spikelets in summer, and being evergreen, it requires minimal maintenance for maximum impact.

Tolerant of some shade but preferring drier conditions, Helictotrichon sempervirens looks very natural growing alongside Mediterranean-style plants. Try it in a gravel border, where its colour is beautifully offset by the honey tones of the stones - and give it room to express itself.

  • Garden care:
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil, ideally with some grit for extra drainage. Water until established, then only during prolonged dry spells, as it prefers drier conditions.

In late winter or early spring, comb through or cut back dead foliage and remove old flower stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh new growth.
