Arching, finely divided triangular fronds are pinkish-bronze in spring, maturing to pale green. This delicate-looking deciduous fern is perfect for a sheltered, water-side planting or a moist shady border. Happiest in humus-rich, acid soil in light dappled shade, Onoclea sensibilis is aptly named as the fronds will scorch if exposed to too much sun.

  • Garden care:
Sensitive fern thrives in consistently moist, humus-rich soil and is best planted in partial shade, though it will tolerate brighter spots if the soil remains damp. Before planting, dig in plenty of organic matter such as compost or leaf mould to improve structure and moisture retention. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods.

Remove any old or damaged fronds in early spring to make way for fresh growth. The plant spreads gradually by rhizomes, so divide overcrowded clumps every few years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate growth and manage its spread. A yearly mulch of leaf mould or compost will help retain moisture and keep the fern's foliage looking lush.
