Small crimson-purple flowers form tassel-like panicles, which can grow to 60cm (24in) long and seem to drip from the branches in profusion throughout summer and early autumn.

Amaranthus caudatus is an interesting and exotic looking annual, that looks super as the centrepiece in a seasonal display. The flowers also last well after being cut and added to fresh or dried arrangements.

  • Garden care:
Plant Amaranthus in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained, fertile soil. It thrives in rich, moisture-retentive ground, so dig in organic matter before planting to improve soil structure.

Space plants about 30-45cm (12-18in) apart to allow good air circulation and give the tall, branching stems room to grow. Water regularly during dry spells and apply a mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Deadheading is not essential, but removing spent flowers can tidy the plant and may prolong blooming.

In exposed sites, staking may be needed to support the long, drooping tassels, especially in windy weather. Feed occasionally with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage strong growth and vivid colour. Treat it as a half-hardy annual, lifting and composting after the first frosts.

  • Sowing instructions:
Provide protection from frost and sow 1mm deep into good seed compost. When large enough to handle, thin seedlings out and pot them on individually. Pinching out the growing tips will encourage bushier growth.

After risk of frost has passed, gradually harden off and plant outside in a sunny, sheltered spot with soil conditioned with well-rotted organic matter. Allow at least 30cm (12in) between each plant.
